Visual convention are those signs and symbols that no one needed to explain their meaning to you, because somewhere deep inside your head you already knew them.
For example, everyone knows that a red sign means stop, and that a circle with a stripe in the middle means do not do. What about the green light? Did you need someone to tell you that it is OK to proceed?
